Founded in 1837, Atlanta is the largest city in the state of Georgia, and the seat of Fulton County. As of the 2014, 51% of Atlanta’s population is African-American, 41% is white 4% is Asian and 4% is Hispanic/Latino. Atlanta’s median household income is $45,171, and nearly 23% of the city’s residents live below the poverty line. Among major U.S. cities, Atlanta has the third-largest LGBT populations, coming in behind San Francisco (#1) and Seattle.
In terms of arts and culture, Atlanta boasts the Atlanta Opera, the Atlanta Ballet, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the Alliance Theatre. It is also home to The Fox Theatre, the High Museum of Art, the Museum of Design Atlanta, the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia.
